who
localhuman industries is me, Tom Saunders. Nice to meet you! I've been working with wood and metal and paper or otherwise making and crafting and fixing since I was old enough to steal my dad's tools, and I feel lucky to be able to that as much as I can.
what
I make things for myself and others. Whether this is furniture, toys, art, or sculpture- If you would like me to make you something please get in contact.
where
Local to South Minneapolis, I do most of my work from my home workshop. I believe that a sense of place is important to what I do and that it guides my work in ways I'm not sure I even fully understand. I feel lucky to live in the community that I do surrounded by friends, family and colleauges who all help add technique, inspiration, and character to whatever I happen to be crafting.
why
Why make things in a world that has enough things? Also, someone already probably did it but better? The Earth is melting and many of my neighbors are struggling just to find a place to sleep or see a doctor. Why commodify something that you love to do? Is there a better way to be as present and loving as possible to my friends, family, neighbors, and those who will replace us?
I don't have the answers to these questions but they are worth asking and thinking about. Working with my hands is a different and necessary way of thinking for me, it is how I work out problems in my head and help solve imaginary problems in lieu of more difficult ones the world presents us. The objects that are a byproduct of this work are a wonderful treat and how I show my gratitude and love to others.
